How to choose a lab grown diamond wedding band

A wedding band is worn every day for a long time, usually next to an engagement ring. That means comfort and fit come first, and the look of the two rings together comes a close second. Here is how to think it through.

Bring your engagement ring

This is the single most useful thing you can do. Some engagement rings sit low enough for a straight band to rest flush against them. Others have a setting or a halo that leaves a gap, and need a curved or notched band to sit close. You can only really tell by trying bands next to your ring. If you are buying both at once, try them as a pair.

Styles for her

  • Pavé band. A row of small diamonds set close together across the top of the band. Bright and easy to match.
  • Half eternity. Diamonds across the top half only. More comfortable for many people and easier to resize later.
  • Full eternity. Diamonds all the way around. The most sparkle from every angle, but it cannot usually be resized, so the size has to be right.
  • Curved or contour band. Shaped to follow the outline of an engagement ring.
  • Plain band. Polished gold or platinum, a quiet counterpoint to a diamond ring.

Styles for him

Men's bands are usually wider, from about 4 to 8 mm. A comfort fit band is rounded on the inside so it slides on and off easily and feels lighter to wear. Finishes range from high polish to brushed or hammered. Some men like a single flush set diamond or a channel of small stones; others prefer plain metal. Both are fine choices. Try a few widths, because a band that looks narrow in a case can feel wide on the hand.

Anniversary bands

Many people add a band for a later anniversary, often an eternity or half eternity style worn next to the original rings. Lab grown diamonds make a larger stone size possible for the same budget. Bring the rings you already wear so the new band suits the stack.

Metal and matching

Most people match the metal of the engagement ring, so the rings wear evenly over time. Platinum is dense and wears very slowly. Gold is lighter and comes in yellow, white and rose. If the two of you want different metals, that is common too.

Width and size

Wider bands fit more snugly than narrow ones, so you may need a quarter or half size larger in a wide band. Our ring size guide explains this, but the easiest way is to try the actual band on. Eternity bands need extra care with sizing, because they are hard to change later.

At your viewing

Save the bands you like with the heart above and bring your engagement ring. We will lay the bands out next to it, check the fit against your ring, and let you try a few widths. Lab grown diamond wedding bands start from $390. The final price depends on the diamonds and metal you choose. When you are ready, book a viewing. Still choosing the engagement ring? Start with our lab grown diamond engagement rings, or design both together with a custom ring.

Questions we hear

Anything else, ask us at your viewing or call (732) 581-7932.

Do the engagement ring and wedding band have to be the same metal?

No, but most people match them. Different metals can wear slightly differently when rubbed together every day.

Can a full eternity band be resized?

Usually not, because diamonds go all the way around. That is why we take extra care to get the size right before you choose one.

Do you make men's bands without diamonds?

Yes. We have plain men's bands in gold and platinum, as well as bands with a single diamond or a channel of small stones.
