Stud earrings look simple, and that is the point. With nothing else going on, the size of the stones, how well they match and how they sit on the ear decide everything. Here is what to think about before your viewing.
Studs are sold by total carat weight, written as ctw. A 1 ctw pair is two stones of about half a carat each. That catches many people out, so it helps to think per stone. As a rough guide for round studs:
| Total weight | Each stone | How it reads |
|---|---|---|
| 0.50 ctw | about 0.25 ct, 4 mm | Small and quiet, good for second piercings and every day |
| 1 ctw | about 0.50 ct, 5.1 mm | The size most people picture when they say diamond studs |
| 2 ctw | about 1 ct, 6.4 mm | Clearly visible across a room |
| 3 ctw and up | 1.5 ct and more each | A statement pair, best with secure backs |
Because lab grown diamonds cost less per carat, many people move up one size from what they first planned. Try two sizes on, one in each ear, and look in the mirror. The right size is usually obvious within a minute.
Studs are not only round. Ovals, princess cuts and pears make pretty pairs too, and the same shape advice applies as for rings. See our shapes guide.
The back is what keeps your studs on, so it deserves real thought. Push backs are simple and common. Screw backs thread onto a post and are much harder to lose, which is why we suggest them for larger pairs and for anyone who sleeps or exercises in their earrings. Ask to try both.
Two stones in a pair should match in size, color and brightness, so neither ear looks different. We match our pairs by eye and by measurement. For larger pairs, ask about stones with grading reports so you can see the grades of each one.
White gold and platinum make a white diamond look as white as possible. Yellow and rose gold give a warmer look and can hide a slightly lower color grade. Pick the metal that goes with the jewelry you already wear most.
Save the pairs you like with the heart above, and they will be waiting when you arrive. We will have a mirror ready, a few sizes to compare, and both types of back to try. Lab grown diamond stud earrings start from $290. The final price depends on the size and stones you choose. When you are ready, book a viewing. Browsing for a full set? Yes. Diamonds are very hard and do not scratch in normal wear. Just check the backs from time to time and clean the stones when they look dull.
Ask us. Single studs are a popular choice for a second piercing and we can often match one to your request.
We set these aside on a tray for your viewing in Suite 805.
